The Undergraduate Chapter
Background
A chapter is the undergraduate franchise of the Fraternity and consists of a group of affiliated students at a particular campus. It is the place where every man becomes a brother. The chapter aids to bring in new members to the Fraternity, be a home away from home for fraters, perform service to the community, abd be a positive social outlet for the college campus. A frater participates most actively in the Fraternity during his chapter days and is forever affiliated with his chapter designation.
How is a Chapter Run?
The chapter is run by the whole membership voting in its weekly meekings and is governed by the Executive Board. A chapter runs its own meetings, has its own traditions and rules, and must adhere to the traditions and rules of the general fraternity.
The Executive Board of a chapter consists of the following men:
- Consul (President)
- Vice Consul (Vice President)
- Scribe (Secretary)
- Quaestor (Treasurer)
- Magister (New Member Educator)
- Alumni Relations Chair
- Editor/Historian
- Custos
- Steward> (House Manager)
Chapters also have two advisory positions from outside the active chapter, the Alumni Advisor and the Chapter Advisor. The Alumni Advisor is a frater of the Fraternity and is, usually, a graduate of the chapter. He advises and helps oversea the chapter on a more day-to-day basis. He is the liason between the Executive Council and the chapter. The Chapter Advisor is a faculty or staff member at the campus in which the chapter is affiliated with. The Chapter Advisor helps the chapter maintain its image on campus and offers guidance on the improvement of the chapter.
What is the Difference Between a Chapter and a Colony?
A chapter is chartered, given the stamp of approval of the general fraternity to run its own. A chapter will initiate its own pledge classes, hold its own events, hold elections, run community service events, etc. A chapter is also given two votes at each National Convention.
A colony is a Pyramid Club seeking chartering. A colony is trying to meet the chartering requirements to become a chapter. A colony is run soley by the Executive Council and is not granted to hold any fraternity functions or processes with out the Executive Council’s approval.
